Aldi UK is embracing alternative wine packaging. As reported by the industry publication Beverage Daily, the discount retailer introduced two wines in the "paper bottle" by Frugalpac as of March 18, 2024. Shortly after, Harpers announced the launch of own-brand wines in flat PET bottles by Packamama at Aldi UK. Both packaging formats are considered more sustainable alternatives to glass due to their significantly lower weight. Additionally, the flat PET bottles offer logistical advantages as nearly a third more bottles fit on a pallet.

"We know shoppers are looking for greener, more sustainable products."

The two wines in the paper bottle are Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc from the South African own-brand "Cambalala," priced at £7.99 ($10) per 0.75 liters each. The flat PET bottles will contain Shiraz and Chardonnay from the Australian own-brand "Chapter & Verse" ($6.70 per bottle), as well as the "Chassaux et Fils Mediterranean Rosé" ($8.90 per bottle).

"We know shoppers are looking for greener, more sustainable products and our aim is to continue to deliver this, whilst offering great value and enhanced functionality. We’re pleased to be taking the next step in expanding our recyclable, eco-friendly range," says Julia Ashfield, Purchasing Director at Aldi UK, as quoted by Harpers.
