Sales in the food retail sector are rising continuously, while the number of sales outlets is falling. This illustrates a clear concentration effect in the German food retail sector, where the majority of Germans buy their wines.

More space and more staff do not necessarily lead to higher costs, especially when considered in relation to sales.

All the major players in the food retail market made further gains in 2022. Kaufland is particularly striking, gaining two places in the ranking compared with the previous year.
 

"Biggest growth at discounters"

In response to the rising cost of living, consumers in Germany have recently turned more to discount stores. Compared to supermarkets and other grocery stores, discounters recorded the highest sales growth of 8% last year. After the Corona crisis drove full-line sales, we now see price-oriented formats ahead in the wake of the Ukraine war.
