Tesco wine sales in line with best-ever interim results

by Charles Metcalfe

Tesco`s wine category has performed as strongly as the rest of the company, which announced half-year results recently up 12.5% on a comparable

period last year. Dan Jago, head of the Tesco wine department, said that sales of white and rosé wines had been very strong over the summer. Tesco has consolidated its position as the UK\'s largest wine retailer. It is also the UK\'s largest on-line wine retailer, Jago added, with 50% of all on-line wine sales in the UK. We had a special offering of rosé in the summer, and sold out within 48 hours. On-line sales have risen to a regular three to four per cent of total wine volumes fro Tesco, peaking at nine to ten per cent for special promotions with free delivery. Outside the UK, Jago is poised for wine growth in their Czech, Hungarian and Polish businesses, to build on existing strong sales of beers and spirits.
