Six times more resveratrol in new wine

The first wine made from genetically modified vines has beenproduced in China, according to New Scientist. The change? It is richerin resveratrol, the compound that is thought to be

responsible for certain health benefits in wine.

The Chinese researcher Yuejin Wang, together with collaborators at theNorthwest Agricultural University of Yangling in the Chinese provinceof Shaanxi, has created a wine in his laboratory that potentially hasgreater health benefits. The team genetically modified a Vitis Viniferavine with a gene that comes from a wild Chinese grape variety, whichhas six times the normal amount of resveratrol.
