A series of pacts to enhance scientific and technological cooperation between India and France were signed during the recent visit of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, including ones for the wine sector. The region of Bordeaux has agreed to

share its wine experience with their Indian counterparts, a development that is expected to benefit grape growers in India and increase French influence in Indian wine making.

The University of Bordeaux and the University of Pune in Maharashtra are planning a joint programme of studies that will cover both wine making and information technology. Pune is the largest growing area in India, producing more wine than the better-known Nashik region.

"We're looking forward to joint research and exchange of students and faculty," said Professor Singaravelou, vice president of the University of Bordeaux.

Presidents and directors of several French research institutes and universities who accompanied Sarkozy held discussions with their Indian counterparts on joint research and student exchange programmes.

President Sarkozy was on a state visit a week ago as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, marking 58 years of India becoming an independent epublic. The head of a state from a friendly nation is always invited as the chief guest.
