Peter Gago on tour to recondition mature Penfolds wines

by Meininger’s Wine Business International

Penfolds recently announced that head winemaker Peter Gago will be touring the world this fall to recondition mature wines. The first sessions at the Shangri La Hotel in Sydney, Langham Hotel in Melbourne and

and Duxton Hotel in Wellington have already taken place. The event at Penfold’s own Magill Estate Restaurant closed today.

Each bottle at every venue will be personally assessed to "determine both the opportune drinking time and its continued cellaring potential". This is a complementary service for anyone with a bottle of Penfolds’ red wine that is over 15 years of age.

If it is deemed to be a good example of the style and vintage, it is topped up with the current vintage of the particular wine. Each bottle is then re-corked, recapsuled, certified and numbered, with a special label signed by the assessing Penfolds winemaker and endorsed by the world’s oldest fine art auction house, Christie’s.

The company claims to have recorked more than 90,000 bottles since the first clinic was held in Australia in 1991.

The dates for the recorking clinic are:

- Sydney, Australia (Shangri La Hotel) 12-14 August 2008
