Michel Rolland releases Bulgarian wines

by Elissaveta Velianova

Bordeaux-based oenologist, Michel Rolland, earlier this month unveiled the first three wines born from his co-operation with Bulgarian winery, Castra Rubra. Castra Rubra is based in southern Bulgaria and is the new project of Jair Agopian.

Mr. Agopian is also a CEO of the Telish winery, which is known both domestically and in Western Europe, Russia and Japan. Michel Rolland and Jair Agopian aim to produce top Bulgarian wines and with Pendar, Via Diagonalis and Tt have made first steps in this direction. The blends inevitably feature Bulgarian varieties in different proportions, including Rubin and Mavrud.

There has been €18m invested in Castra Rubra. So far fruit is outsourced, but the company aims to integrate vertically into grape production and plant a total of 250 ha vineyards.
