Liquid Gold brings art to Chablis

by Charles Metcalfe

Art Actuel, France s largest contemporary art magazine, has commissioned an exhibition, Liquid Gold , 11 eye-catching portraits by French photographer Bettina Rheims of top model Margarita Svegzdaite. They will be exhibited in London at two venues, Covent Garden Market (9-31 January 2007) and the Bluebird (2-28 February 2007), and were shown for the first time to the press at the Bluebird last week.

The exhibition is supported by the Chablis region, and is described as an artistic interpretation of Chablis wines . It is publicity through exhibitions, explained Michel Laroche, one of Chablis best-known growers, who attended the London launch. Britain is our top market for Chablis, so we re launching here. Then we ll take the exhibition to New York, Tokyo, Russia and China. There is a website dedicated to the exhibition, www.chablis-the-french-chic.com, which reveals a fresh photo each week.

Bettina Rheims is a master at magnifying feminine beauty, said Arnaud Valour, communications manager for the Wines of Chablis. She unveils the sensuality, emotion, pride and fragility of her models, and reveals, as she puts it, the light that comes from their inner beings . All these feelings are very much in line with our wines, often described as natural, refined and elegant while maintaining sincerity and simplicity.
