Kendall-Jackson to release low-calorie, low-carb Chardonnay

Demand for “lighter wines” in the US has grown, and K-J’s Avant will deliver.

Kendall-Jackson, one of California’s largest wine producers, will launch a Chardonnay that is low in calories, carbs and alcohol. Branded “Avant,” the Chardonnay will contain just 85 calories per glass with 3 grams of carbs and no sugar. At 23% less calories than the standard Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay, Avant also contains just 9% ABV as opposed to the 14% in Kendall-Jackson’s standard.

This comes down to the process, as explained by Kendall-Jackson winemaker Randy Ullom. He says, “An initial harvest of grapes picked on the earlier side ensures lower sugar. A secondary harvest later in the season offers more complexity and concentration, which complements the wine, producing a full-bodied blend that’s structurally balanced and delicious, yet lower in alcohol and calories.”

With trends reflecting more health-conscious consumers in both the United States and elsewhere, Jackson Family Wines noted the potential of their low-calorie Avant, which is also vegan. The wine will retail for $17 per bottle and will be in stores in May.
