Inniskillin Wines gets into energy

by Wine Business International

Famed Canadian Icewine producer Inniskillin is to create renewable electricity from the winery’s grape products, in partnership with StormFisher Biogas.

Inniskillin, which has vineyards in the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario and the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, produces between 1,000 to 2,000 tonnes of grape pomace, comprising skin and seeds. These byproducts, which would previously have ended in landfill, produce methane gas as they decompose. The gas will now be captured and used to generate power for homes in the Niagara region.

StormFisher, an Ontario-based biogas developer and operator, produces renewable energy from food and beverage processing by-products. Many of Europe’s food and beverage processing byproducts are used to generate biogas, a process gaining favour in North America.
