Viticulture is Argentina's most lucrative agricultural sector. This is according to official data up to 2020 from the Ministries of Productive Development, Agriculture and the National Viticulture Institute (INV), collected by the Argentine Viticulture Observatory. The report shows that one hectare of vineyards generates more income from export goods and more employment than any other agricultural product in Argentina.

According to the report, one hectare of vineyard generates on average exports for a total of US$4,800. This is almost double what one hectare of peanuts exports (US$2,683) and is equivalent to 5.6 times soybean exports per hectare, which amount to US$857.

The Argentine wine sector is also of particular importance for employment in the country. For every 100 hectares of cultivated land in production, viticulture creates around 72 jobs. This is ten times more than the jobs created by peanut production (7 per 100 hectares in production) and far exceeds the amount of jobs created by the exporters of barley, sunflower, wheat, corn or soybeans. All these sectors employ between 1-3 people per 100 hectares of cultivated land.

"These data reflect the energizing effect that viticulture has on regional economies and the potential to generate genuine foreign exchange and create jobs in rural areas," highlights Daniel Rada, director of the Argentine Wine Observatory. ed
