In 2016, González Byass bought Agustín Huneeus’s majority shareholding in Viñedos Veramonte and Neyen Apalta Estate. The company has now announced that it will also acquire the remainder of the shares that had remained in the hands of the Rojas family. Paul Rojas had bought the Neyen Estate in 1970 and was one of the first to develop the Apalta Valley which has become one of Chile’s upper premium regions. While the modern Neyen Apalta Estate winery dates from 2002, the estate, one of the oldest in the Apalta region, was founded as long ago as 1890. So there are many very old vines and today's estate is known for 120-year-old Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were imported from Bordeaux before phylloxera. The winery was acquired from Agustin Huneeus’s Huneeus Vintners in 2010. The estate covers around 135ha in Apalta which are all organically grown.
Veramonte was similarly pioneering when Agustin Huneeus launched it in 1990 in the then-undeveloped, cool-climate Casablanca Valley where he established its headquarters while also investing in the Colchagua Valley. The company’s total landholding represents about 500 hectares, all of which are also cultivated organically.
