The work of Fritz Keller—who was recently elected head of Germany’s football association, the DFB—has proved that this winery ranks among the best in Germany, thanks to its impressive Spätburgunder.

Meyer-Näkel of the Ahr, which came in second place, was also recognised for the quality of its Spätburgunder. Brother Andreas and Steffen Rings came in third.

“The Spätburgunder from the best individual plots of Germany have impressed us deeply,” said Christian Wolf, tasting manager of the prize. “We especially liked the other ‘domestic’ varieties like Lemberger, Portugieser, Frühburgunder or St. Laurent. There are many German winegrowers who help these wines to shine.”

Many of the top-rated wines were from the 2017 vintage. Wines from the Rheinland Palatinate scored 279 awards, while Württemberg came in second with 197. Then came Baden (147), Rheinhessen (112) and the Ahr (31).

The prize was organised by Meininger Verlag, the publisher of Meininger’s Wine Business International. The full results can be found here. (In German.)
