Wines of Spain now have a common denominator

by Victor de la Serna

Spain now has a new geographical designation that covers wines from all parts of the county, Viñedos de España. This new Indicatión Geográfica

will be introduced with the vintage 2006, which officially began on the 1st of August. Intended to be a larger entity that allows wines from all parts of the country to blended and marketed with both vintage and varietal, the initiative has not been met with enthusiasm in all parts of the country. In particular parts of Navarra and all of Rioja have opted out of the programme. Producers of entry level, value for money wines have, on the other hand, laud the new legislation.
