The crisis also produces winners: the online wine trade portal Wine.com has announced a 115 percent increase in turnover for the completed financial year (until 31 March 2021). In total, $355 million were turned over.

Above all, the partnership program StewardShip, where Wine.com members receive their shipments free of charge for a flat fee of $49 per year, has caused strong growth: 97 percent of the customers opted in for this service during the period. Revenue from these members increased 146 percent to $209 million, representing almost 60 percent of the company's total revenue.

Wine.com's rating and sales app provided a turnover of $117 million, an increase of 141 percent compared to the previous year. Customer wine reviews on the app increased by 284 percent to now around 61,000 reviews.

The fastest growing target group segment is "millennials and generation Z" — they made up 44 percent of all new Wine.com customers. In total, 100,000 people were reached via online tastings with vintners and celebrities, the company said.

“Customers who found us during COVID to avoid a trip to the store are realizing Wine.com offers selection, guidance and convenience you can’t find in stores,” said Rich Bergsund, Wine.com CEO.  “We’re excited to use technology to inspire wine and spirits discovery and continue the acceleration toward Ecommerce in our category.” aw
