Total ban on alcohol advertising in Thailand

by Robert Joseph

The Thai government has banned all advertising for alcoholic beverages beginning December 3rd 2006. The ban not only forbids conventional advertising in the media, but also puts an end to logos on sunshades, aprons, trays and other items that are often used for on-trade marketing. Further, if a company uses the same logo for various different drinks, like the lion of Singha beer that is also used on water sold by the same group, not even the soft drink may be advertised anymore. With the same law, the legal drinking age has been raised from 20 to 25 years and all sales of alcohol prohibited within a radius of 500 metres around nurseries, schools, universities and temples.
