They were the first to produce a dry white aperitif port, says the statement from the renowned port house. The Chip Dry White Port was first produced in 1934. Now the house is moving with the times and launching a ready-mixed Port & Tonic in a can. Taylor's Chip Dry & Tonic comes ready to drink with 5.5% abv in the 250 ml can, the mixing ratio port wine to tonic is one third to two thirds. The residual sugar content is 32 g/l. The aperitif will be launched initially in the UK, US and Portugal and will cost around £1.99 in the UK.

"Taylor's Port, known for its innovation and pioneering spirit, has always strived over the years to broaden the customer base for port and meet the needs of consumers without compromising on the excellent quality of its port wines. This has been a source of our company's success since 1692, and Taylor's Chip Dry & Tonic is the culmination of a two-year collaboration with the Port Wine Institute that will undoubtedly help more consumers appreciate port," comments Adrian Bridge, managing director of Taylor's.

The company has registered the trademark "Portonic" especially for this product, and the term can be found on the front of the can. This is to counteract the misunderstanding that the drink — like a port wine — contains about 20 percent alcohol.

According to the industry magazine The Drinks Business, Taylor's is not the first company to bring this mixed drink in a can to the market. Martins de Sa Port already launched its Port & Tonic can mix in March 2020, albeit labelled as "Spitzer" at the time. However, the product will also be labelled as "Portonic" from this summer. aw
