The Austrian wine industry is pleased about increases in exports in 2020. Until recently, a slight decline in exports was expected due to the Corona pandemic. However, the ÖWM is now presenting current figures, referring to Statistik Austria. In a press release, ÖWM managing director Chris Yorke joyfully describes the situation as "an incredible achievement of the Austrian wine industry."

Exports increased to a total of 67.4 million litres or 187.3 million euros. In percentage terms, the increases are 6.3 percent and 2.4 percent respectively. For Yorke, this is a testimony to "the great appeal that wine from Austria now has worldwide."

The development on the German and Swiss markets is particularly pleasing. While Germany grew by 10.2 percent in volume and 1.7 percent in value, in Switzerland it was 20.1 percent in volume and 5.2 percent in value. From Austria's point of view, similar developments are also taking place in the Netherlands: With 19.2 percent growth in volume and 6.1 percent in value, the Netherlands is displacing the USA from third place among the most important consumer markets.

The monopoly markets of Scandinavia – Norway and Sweden also recorded strong growth in both volume and value. The same applies to Canada and Russia. The East Asian and US markets are causing difficulties. US exports declined by 4.2 percent in volume and 7.9 percent in value.

The top 10 export countries, weighted by value, are led by Germany (46.27 percent), Switzerland and Liechtenstein (11.43 percent), the Netherlands (8.22 percent) and the USA (8.20 percent). sw
