Dr Volker Wissing, minister of the Rhineland Pfalz region of Germany, along with publishers Meininger Verlag, honoured some of the world’s best Rieslings, in an award ceremony held in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

The wines were winners of the annual Best of Riesling competition, which this year saw 2,445 wines from 14 countries land on the judging tables.

“This year, we were once again highly impressed by the quality of the Rieslings submitted, which covered a wide range of styles even at such a high level. It was often a very close decision when it came to choosing the final winners,” said Ilka Lindemann, editor-in-chief of Meiningers Weinwelt.

Eight categories of Rieslings, ranging from dry to sweet, were evaluated in eight preliminary rounds of tasting. The best 500 wines were then tasted and evaluated by an international jury of experts in two final rounds, with 125 making it into the best of the best.

Alongside the winners of the eight categories, special awards are also given for ‘Best Dry Steep Slope Riesling’, ‘Best Dry European Riesling’ and ‘Best Dry Riesling in Food Retail’.

The majority of the Rieslings in this year’s competition originated from German wine regions, led by the Palatinate, Rheinhessen, Mosel, Rheingau, Württemberg, Nahe and Franconia. The competition also featured international Rieslings, including wines from France, Austria and Luxembourg, as well as Australia and South America.
Patron Dr Volker Wissing, deputy minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate and minister for economic affairs, transport, agriculture and viticulture, congratulated the winners at the awards ceremony held at the Meininger Verlag publishing house.

A list of the winners plus more information about the competition can be found here.

Meininger Verlag, which organises the competition, is publisher of Meininger’s Wine Business International magazine.
