Fosters stirs local opinion in Australia

by James Halliday

Fosters has been stirring opinions recently. It has released mid-range Wolf Blass wines in plastic bottles; it has bedecked Penfolds Koonunga Hill red and others in that price

bracket in bottle reminiscent of the Taittinger art series, i.e. gaudily painted; and most provocatively released Lindemans wines made in South Africa and Chile in standard 750 ml bottles. The financial analysts love the idea; more conservative observers in Australia are appalled. They argue that a sense of place is essential for all wines, no matter how humble. Beer can be brewed anywhere, but not wine.
