Fitou to go it alone

by Hervé Lalau

The Fitou syndicate representing the Appellation, led by its President Jean-Marc Astruc, has decided to leave the Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins du Languedoc (CIVL). Fitou winegrowers feel that the foundation of the Inter-Sud federation, which is to group not only the CIVL, but also CIVR (Roussillon), Inter- Oc (vin de pays d´Oc) and ANIVIT (vins de pays and vins de table)is too time consuming. "Everyone is talking about unity, but most are dragging their feet" says Astruc.

Given that Fitou is the oldest AOC of the region and the one with the best image, its winegrowers also believe that they are paying too high a fee to the CIVL for the service it renders. Analyst reckon that whereas both the Inter-Sud federation and the South of France wine concept are good ideas, the CIVL is one level of unnecessary bureaucracy.
