Industry rumors have been confirmed: Deutsche Post's logistics division, DHL, is taking over the international freight company Hillebrand, as the two companies report in a joint statement. The antitrust authorities in various countries have yet to approve the transaction.

Accordingly, the Deutsche Post DHL Group (DPDHL) have an agreement to take over up to 100 percent of J.F. Hillebrand Group AG and its subsidiaries, signed for around €1.5 billion. With the takeover, DHL wants to position itself more strongly in the sea freight business and in the transport of liquids, it is said. Hillebrand's own flexitank production, for example, sets “standards in this sector.”

"In view of the strength we have achieved in our freight forwarding business, the takeover of Hillebrand is an excellent addition to our existing portfolio. In line with our corporate strategy, we are strengthening our core logistics business and ensuring long-term profitable growth," says Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL Group.

Hillebrand itself has grown vigorously in recent months: at the end of 2020, the British logistics company Braid was taken over; in May of this year it was announced that Hillebrand was taking over the French company VignoblExport; and in July the Portuguese logistics service provider Unedecom was taken over.

Hillebrand was founded in Mainz in 1844 and is a global service provider specializing in sea freight forwarding, and transport and logistics of beverages, non-hazardous liquid bulk goods, and other products that have specific transport requirements.
The company employs more than 2,700 people worldwide and, according to DHL, generated sales of around €1.4 billion in the last twelve months. aw
