CK Mondavi and Family is set to celebrate its 75th anniversary this year. In honor of this milestone, the brand has unveiled labels printed with thermochromic ink on all its white wines. The label, when chilled to 18 degrees Celsius, changes from pale hues to bright, eye-catching colors, indicating the optimal drinking temperature for their white wines. In addition to the color-changing labels, the anniversary bottles also feature a 75th anniversary seal.

The use of thermochromic labelling, although a great way to celebrate a milestone, is not a new technology. Coors Light launched their “Cold Activated Bottle” back in May of 2007. Treasury Wine Estates used the technology in 2017 to launch their “Chill Check” innovation for the release of their Matua Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé, an innovation which Matua is still using. Interestingly, a company can choose the temperature at which the labels change color, indicating the optimal drinking temperature for its selected product. Coors, for example, changes color between 4.5 and 7.2 degrees Celsius and the Matua wines at 7 degrees Celsius.

Speaking of the milestone anniversary and the release of the special commemorative labels, Riana Mondavi, member of the fourth generation of the family and the Director of Chains – Western Region, said, “Respecting tradition while also pushing forward on new winemaking, marketing and business opportunities is all in the spirit of CK Mondavi and Family. As we plan for the next 75 years, I hope my grandparents, and great-grandparents, would be proud of all our family has accomplished.”
