Carol Whitehead new Champagne Ambassadeur

by Charles Metcalfe and Bernard Burtschy

Carol Whitehead, an American wine educator who has lived in the England since 1989, has beaten educators from 7 other European countries to win the 2nd annual Champagne Ambassadeur title in Reims. As she is American, Whitehead was not eligible to compete last year, when another British educator, Anthony Stacey, took second place. This year, the rules were relaxed to allow non Europeans working in the EU to compete. She spent time in Paris as a student, and was able to answer the questions posed by the judges in the competition in fluent French. I don\'t think any of them, apart from the English judge, realised I wasn\'t English , she said. She is self-taught, and passed the Diploma exam of the WSET some years ago. Her next project is to write a dissertation for her Diploma with Honours. The subject? Something about Champagne, of course.
