The Frescobaldi family is one of the world’s oldest wine families. In addition, the Frescobaldis have shaped the history of Tuscany as traders and bankers for more than a thousand years. Therefore, their wines are steeped in tradition. It is remarkable how loyal the family has remained to its native region.

The first documents showing that the family made wine date back to approximately 1300, when Berto de‘ Frescobaldi willed land to his descendants, including vineyards. Around the year 1000, the first ancestors had settled in Florence; they came from the Val di Pesa. The Palazzo Frescobaldi, which the respected members of various guilds such as the wool and silk guild built in the Oltrarno district, still stands today; many members of the family still live here today. In the 15th century, the family was engaged in lively trade with Flanders, England, and China, and wine was exported.

An illustrious customer was Henry VIII of England. Grand Duke Cosimo III de‘ Medici awarded the Pomino, a wine that was known in the 17th century, the status of a legally protected name in 1716, long before the invention of the appellations based on the French model. The Merchese Vittorio degli Albizzi, born in Burgundy, brought unusual grape varieties to Tuscany in 1855: Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot...

Some of the Frescobaldi’s pioneering initiatives in modern times included the exemplary Italian-Californian joint venture with Robert Mondavi: Luce della Vite close to Montalcino, a wine that set standards. In 1989, the family acquired Castel Giocondo in Montalcino, where first-class Brunello is produced. In 2005, Tenuta Ornellaia was added.

The 30th generation currently consists of Lamberto, Tiziana, and Diana Frescobaldi as well as Stefano Benini (export manager) and brothers Ferdinando, Leonardo, and Vittorio, who are responsible for the biggest wineproducing operation in Tuscany and one of the most important in Italy. Tuscan tradition is a family value. It was not until the year 2000 that the company purchased a vineyard outside of the Tuscany region, the vineyard Attems in the Collio region. In Tuscany as well as adjoining regions, several vineyards with a total vineyard area of approximately 1,200 hectares belong to the family, each unique and distinct in terms of their wines: Castello di Pomino with vineyards to an altitude of 750 metres; the famous Castello di Nipozzano (300 hectares under vines), where outstanding red wines such as the Montesodi are produced; Castel Giocondo close to Montalcino, where first-rate Brunello wines are made; Tenuta di Castiglioni located southwest of Florence, where the history of winegrowing started with the Frescobaldis; Tenuta dell‘ Ammiraglia in the Maremma region with its modern architecture; and the Santa Maria (Morellino di Scansano) as well as Costa di Nugola close to Livorno.
